A deep background in dynamometer/vehicle testing, OBD strategy development, and translating OEM requirements into robust control logic is essential for success in this role.
Key Responsibilities
Powertrain Calibration
- Develop and refine calibration strategies for internal-combustion and hybrid powertrains to hit OEM performance, drivability, startability, and durability targets.
- Execute dynamometer and on-road calibration for emissions, fuel economy, cold-start, and drive-cycle compliance.
Emissions & OBD Compliance
- Design, implement, and validate OBD strategies that meet or exceed EPA, CARB, Euro 6/7, China 6, and other global regulations.
- Diagnose and resolve emissions-related issues alongside OEM engineering, delivering fully certified solutions.
Testing & Validation
- Plan and conduct engine, powertrain, and full-vehicle tests (dyno, environmental chamber, altitude, on-road) to verify calibration robustness across operating extremes.
- Analyze large data sets, identify trends, and iterate control logic to ensure consistent performance for multiple vehicle lines.
OEM Collaboration & System Integration
- Serve as the primary technical interface to OEM powertrain teams, translating their targets into actionable calibration and validation plans.
- Integrate calibrations with engine controllers, hybrid supervisory controls, and aftertreatment hardware (SCR, DPF, TWC).
Regulatory & Industry Leadership
- Stay current on global emissions / OBD legislation (LEV III, WLTP, RDE, etc.) and upcoming OEM implementation standards, advising internal and customer teams proactively.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education – B.S. / M.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive Engineering, or related discipline.
- Experience – 7+ years in calibration / controls engineering for ICE or hybrid powertrains, including direct OEM program execution and certification support.
- Technical Proficiency –
- ETAS INCA, Vector CANape, ATI Vision, or comparable calibration toolchains.
- CAN/LIN, UDS, and other in-vehicle communication protocols.
- MATLAB/Simulink for model-based development and rapid prototyping.
- Strong grasp of combustion fundamentals, emissions aftertreatment, and hybrid energy-management strategies.
- ETAS INCA, Vector CANape, ATI Vision, or comparable calibration toolchains.
- Soft Skills –
- Proven ability to navigate OEM phase-gate processes and strict timelines.
- Clear, concise communicator comfortable presenting complex data to cross-functional and executive audiences.
